AS Opening Seqence

Casting

Because we mainly shot our film in POV shots, we never needed no cast. We decided to film our sequence in POV shots, because we never wanted to give away the indentity of our character, we wanted to keep it secret to intice them into watching more. We had Jesse (Cameraman) to do our breathing and footsteps off screen. The benefits of having no cast were that we never had to wait for them to turn up to shoot, we all had the trust of the members in our group, and knew we would all turn up on the day of filming, however we would not have this trust on a cast.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Looking back onto the preliminary task I found this quite easy because it was rather fun, and was not too complicated. This helped me progress from this onto the full product because, finding that easy and quite enjoyable I was quite excited to progressing onto other aspects of the film. In our preliminary task we learnt the basics of making a film, by learning all details about the camera, sound and editing. Our preliminary task made me aware of all of the aspects of all technical items for our main film, and having a pre run of making a sequence helped me, because I made mistakes where I learnt from and I knew not to make again in my main production. For example, when filming our preliminary task me and my partner used shots that we thought would go well, but after the editing stage they did not click with the rest of our sequence, so we understood that in order to improve for our main task we would have to prepare all different shots for all different situations, in order not to make the mistake again.

Pre planning was quite practical, in drawing a storyboard. This helped me visualise my film, and made me excited to be a part of the filming process, and I was excited to be screening it to my fellow classmates. Again, this helped me make fewer mistakes as before, because in our preliminary task we made a storyboard, but changed halfway through because it was not working well, we then had to recreate a new storyboard, and this wasted time on the filming of our sequence, therefore for our main task we spent more time originally designing our storyboard to get it near perfect, this gave us more time for the technical aspects of our film.

The main difference from preliminary task and main task was, that I was unaware of how many mistakes I would make in my preliminary task, but these mistakes I felt personally made my main task stronger, because everybody makes mistakes, and you can only learn from them, which is what I did.

With the post production of my film, again in the preliminary task I was unfamiliar with the editing software, so I was a new learner, because of this, we never filled in our continuity sheets in well, we did not clearly highlight the good and bad shots, this lead to confusion whilst digitising. We had to digitise all our shots, and watch them one by one to see what were good and what were bad. This took us an extra hour in doing, which for our main task we would not have. Therefore I learnt from this, and made sure the director of my film was highlighting the shots with ticks and crosses. Leading onto our editing for the main film, this made is easier and quicker. This gave us more time to work on the order of the shots, and soundtracks, along with the speed of our editing.

I felt the preliminary task helped immensely because without this task I feel I would have made many mistakes, and that my sequence would not be of a high standard that I believe it is now.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

We used several different types of technologies whilst filming our film, for example we used the editing software ‘premiere pro’. The camera was Canon XHA1. And with the sound aspects of our film, we had a microphone with the boom pole, as though we were filming a proper blockbuster. I was on the sound zone for our film. I learnt different ways to use the equipment and felt more and more confident because I used this equipment several times before it came to the real thing. I learnt how to connect all of the equipment together holding and using the equipment safely. Whilst Jesse was using the camera, I still picked up more information watching her film. For our film we hardly used the tripod, trying out different techniques of running with the camera because we aimed to have a POV of someone running, however having the camera on a tripod would not make this look realistic. And for the editing part, this year we have started using premiere pro, before this year I had never heard of this program let alone use it. So we had a few test runs using this, and I gradually became more and more confident using the software. So when it came to the actual film, I was confident to come in and edit on my own, knowing that I was confident using the software.

Q5

How did you attract/address your audience?

To attract our audience, we would have to advertise our film in several different ways, in order to attract different types of people. For example, we would have to create different posters to place in different areas, where our target audience would clearly see them.

For example, creating a poster to stick around on the streets, near bus stations, or train stations because many kids get these transports to school. So therefore they would see our poster daily and possibly be attracted to our film. Also placing them around shopping centres on billboards, because many kids tend to go shopping on a Saturday or Sunday and would see our poster.
Our poster will have a clear title in White Bold font, with a character in the centre of the frame. The Person is wearing black clothing, with would use low key lighting in order to blacken half of his face out, this would give off the mysterious effect to our audience.

We also attracted people to our film by the actual footage, of a persons POV running down the road constantly ringing Michelle. This would attract our audience because they are on their toes, and are eager to find our what will happen next in the film. Also by the way we have not relieved the identity of our character in the opening sequence, we entice the audience to keep watching, because they are wanting to watch more to see who the character is, and what their main intensions are.

Q4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Our main audience for our film is older kids, i.e. 15-17 year olds.
Simply because they are a similar age of our main cast, we believed this as the pace of our story is fast and young people usually like to live life fast paced. However this could change, because our film could also attract young men, in their 20’s, but we are preliminary aiming at teenagers. To attract them to our film, we stick to one continuous story, in order to not confuse them, but to entice them as well. Our film is mainly aimed at boys, however it could branch over to females too, because a thriller is not the common film a female teenager would watch, however a few of them would relate to the film, because a similar story could be happening in the ‘real’ lives and relate to Michelle (our character being stalked).

Q3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Because our film is an independent, it would only be targeted by independent film distributors, simply because our film is not a blockbuster made film, even if it was up to that standard. Just because it is a low budget or and independent film, does not mean it cannot be “successful”, this would be on a small scale audience, because it will not be distributed worldwide.

Distributors such as YouTube would be an ideal location for me to screen my film, because most users of the website are our target audiences, and would find our film easy with the searching options. Our film would come up as a ‘related videos’ to many videos that they have searched, it could jump out at them.

YouTube allows users to have their own account, where people can upload and share videos, but also comment on videos and rate out of 5 stars. This would be good because I could share my film for many people to see, where they could rate and give their good and bad opinions on my film, telling me what I could do better next time I chose to create a film.

Q2:

How does your opening sequence represent particular social groups?

The main social groups aimed for our film are young boys and girls, in higher education (i.e. College). These are the typical thriller target audience, and usually the ages of main characters in this genre. For example we tried to represent our character as a black African Male (Even if the audience does not see the character), quite young around 16 years of age, and in higher education of college or 6th form. We used certain costumes to show this, he would wear very dark clothing, i.e. Black trousers. We used these colours and items of clothing to represent him, firstly as a male with the trousers and then evil and possessive with the black colour. He is the typical loner kid of the school, shown by his colour of his clothing; black is a very neutral outcast colour. Typically worn by Goths (Outcasts of High school social groups) Throughout our sequence we used Point of view shots, with George not coming into contact with people or being inside, when he is inside the house he is quite calm and collective. However once outside he becomes scared and quite edgy, causing him to faint, showing him being uncomfortable of being around society.
